How to Add a Watermark to a PDF — Free & Private
Add a text or image watermark to every page of a PDF directly in your browser — no upload, no server, no account. Customize the watermark text, angle, opacity, font size, and spacing. Useful for marking drafts, stamping confidential documents, or branding reports. Processing uses pdf-lib entirely client-side.
Open the Watermark tool
Navigate to the Watermark tool under the Annotate tab.
Upload your PDF
Drag the PDF onto the file tray or click to browse. The file stays in your browser.
Configure the watermark
For text watermarks: enter your text (e.g. 'DRAFT' or 'CONFIDENTIAL'), then adjust angle (–90° to 90°), opacity, font size, and spacing. For image watermarks: upload a PNG logo and select one of 9 position presets.
Apply & Download
Click 'Apply & Download'. The watermark is burned into every page of the PDF and the file downloads to your device.
FAQ
- Does adding a watermark establish copyright?
- No. A watermark is a visual marker only. It does not create legal copyright protection or constitute a legally binding mark. For legal document protection, consult a qualified attorney.
- Can the watermark be removed by the recipient?
- Text watermarks added by this tool are baked into the PDF content stream, not added as an overlay layer. They are significantly harder to remove than annotation-layer watermarks, but a determined person with PDF editing software could still attempt to remove them.
- What image formats are supported for image watermarks?
- PNG and JPEG are supported, up to 5 MB. PNG is recommended if your logo has a transparent background.
- Is my PDF uploaded when adding a watermark?
- No. The entire process runs in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file is never sent to any server.
